Starting a Heirloom Tradition: Be the virtuoso of something new

by Millie Icaro January 13, 2013

While wedding veils have always had a religious significance, modern brides use them not for the religious significance, but for fashion since wearing one can complete their desired look. Somehow, wearing one seems to make the whole occasion a little more charismatic.
The history of the veil is important as well. Many who lived in Ancient Greece and Rome believed that a veil kept evil spirits away from the bride.

According to folklore, the first lace veil was worn by Nelly Curtis, at her wedding to George Washington's aid, Major Lawrence Lewis.  Major Lewis saw his bride standing behind a filmy curtain; he was so entranced by her allure that he commented on how beautiful she appeared. She decided to recreate the effect of their wedding by fashioning a veil out of lace.
If you have invested in a silk veil, why not start a tradition from your wedding? Veils can be passed down  through generations. You should make every attempt to preserve the veil.
To preserve your veil, you can either store it in an archival acid-free box or hang your veil in a 100% cotton bag.  Some paper materials contain acid and this, over time, can damage fabric and veil material. Another important aspect is where you store the veil. Never use the attic or basement. The best place to store it is in a proper controlled temperature; for example, under a bed or in a closet, since this will insure your beautiful veil will last for generations to come.

A 100% silk tulle has some characteristic which can be easily identifiable: it is naturally ivory in color with a hexagonal interlock, sheer, soft, and stays flatter than other tulles.

As the saying goes, “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed,  Something Blue, and a Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe.”
